The guys over at 37signals and Coudal have always been known for the beautiful minimalist designs they create, but this one might be their best effort. The design is in the typography and the typography alone. It’s easy to throw up an aesthetically pleasing design when you use an abundance of colors, images and gradients, but when your only outlet is the letters on the page how far can you go?
As designers we can have a problem at times remembering that we design for the content, not for the pleasure of getting ooohs and aaaahs. This is a great case of letting the content dictate the design. At the end of the day you aren’t looking to entertain or win awards, you are there to care for the content that you are presenting and Mark Wieman does an excellent job of that.
An oldie, but goodie. MSM sites could learn a thing or two about how to produce a newspaper like site that doesn’t over load the users with information, but gives them just enough to keep them on the site and digging deeper and deeper.
The King of Grids, Khoi Vinh knows how to work a grid and typography in a way that makes you forget that usually there are no images (or very little) present in his designs.
Probably the least minimalistic site of the bunch due to the background images being used more for decoration than any actual use, Bronwyn excels at creating a grid structure that doesn’t let the images overpower the words on the page.
Thank you for your kind words about my web site. I’m flattered to be included in such good company.
